Yesterday Vincent, Amy, the campaign crew, and numerous dedicated supporters packed up and headed to the Pee Dee for the Galivants Ferry "Stump," a biennial event that is considered to be the oldest "stump-speaking" event in the nation.  According to the Stump's website, the event dates all the way back to 1876 when General Wade Hampton arrived at Galivants Ferry to kick off his gubernatorial campaign.

The 2010 Stump was held at Pee Dee Farms, a century-old general store located on Highway 501 by the Little Pee Dee River.  Political enthusiasts from all over the state braved the sweltering weather (hey, it kept the chicken bog from drying out!) to enjoy bluegrass music, clogging, and rousing stump speeches by candidates ranging from the local level to statewide office-seekers.  South Carolina's Congressman James Clyburn and Special Guest Congressman John Larson of Connecticut rallied the crowd.

Myrtle Beach's Sun News has extensive coverage of the event, including a blow-by-blow account live from the event by Lorena Anderson that you can read here as well as Lorena's recap story here.  (Photos and video are included.)

From Lorena's live coverage:

Not all the electricity in the air today comes from the potential thunderstorm looming over Galivants Ferry.

Hundreds are gathering at the local General Store for the biennial Galivants Ferry Stump to hear from Democratic politicians.

One small storm was already defused as gubernatorial candidate Vincent Sheheen took some loud jeers from supporters of rival Jim Rex as he entered the Stump grounds.

But Sheheen quickly shook hands with Rex's sign-bearers and went on about his business.

There's live bluegrass music and dancers, the local Masonic lodge is cooking up some chicken bog and politicians from all over the Grand Strand, the region, the state and the nation are gathering to meet people one on one and to plead their cases from the stump tonight.
