Democratic gubernatorial candidate Sen. Vincent Sheheen wears his title of front runner lightly.
Ask him about it and he shrugs.
Ask him whether he expects to be the nominee and he smiles in a way that makes him seem younger than 39.
“I’m just trying to to get through Tuesday,” he says.
In this final campaign blitz before Tuesday’s primary, Sheheen has hung up his fundraising phone and taken his message to the state’s small towns.
It is in these rural communities, Chester and Fairfield County on this Friday, Sheheen says he feels most at home.
Talk to a few folks and the whole county knows you’ve been there before nightfall.
And they’re always glad you came.
“I’m going to vote Tuesday and I’m going to vote for you,” sings Carolyn Clayton, a Chester resident, as she grabs Sheheen’s arm as if they’re lifelong friends.
“I’m usually a,” she cups her hands dramatically around her mouth. “one of those that starts with an R. But I watched you in a debate at the beach. You convinced me.”
