Sanford Statement

I am extremely saddened to write of the recent happenings in South Carolina government. As a husband and father of three little boys, I am especially saddened about the family challenges facing the Sanfords, and I wish them God‘s blessings in finding a healing path. I hope the press and public will respect the privacy of Ms. Sanford and the children, as I believe common decency demands.

Although it is difficult to address this issue, it is an obligation that cannot be shirked by those of us elected to lead this State through times of crisis. That we are in the midst of a crisis is clear. But as the highest official in this land, the Governor is expected to meet certain levels of conduct in his official capacity. These include responsibility in executing his office and most importantly truthfulness with his staff and with our people. Going AWOL to South America is not acceptable behavior. Most importantly, and unquestionably, the office of the Governor has been damaged. Unquestionably, the reputation of the State of South Carolina has been injured. Unquestionably, the confidence of our people in our government has been shaken to the core. These are the factors that must determine Mark Sanford's continued service as governor.
